A routine patrol turned chaotic when an officer’s vehicle was struck in what appears to be a deliberate act. According to body-camera footage and dispatch audio, the incident unfolded late at night on a busy roadway, leaving stunned bystanders and a police officer calling for immediate medical assistance.
“Start an ambulance,” the officer can be heard shouting in the recording, his voice tense as he radios for help. “My vehicle’s just been hit. Somebody ran into me, pushed my vehicle into the other vehicle.” The crash reportedly involved at least three cars.
As the scene stabilized, the officer approached a dazed man standing near the wreckage. “Hey, come over here, buddy. Get out of the road. Have a seat,” the officer said, guiding him to safety. At first, the man appeared confused, answering “I don’t know, man” when asked what had happened. Moments later, however, he gave a startling confession.
“I’ve been drinking, okay? And I took some pills,” the man admitted. Then he added, “I did that on purpose, sir.”
The officer asked for clarification. “So you ran in the back of me on purpose?”
“Yeah,” the man responded without hesitation. “Why is that?” the officer pressed.
“I hate cops, man,” the suspect said flatly.
The admission shocked onlookers and underscored the dangerous unpredictability officers face on the job. Despite the collision and his apparent intoxication, the man remained relatively calm as the officer continued to question him. When asked if he had any weapons, he replied “No, sir,” and cooperated as the officer checked him for safety.
An ambulance arrived shortly after the crash to treat any injuries sustained in the incident. It’s unclear from initial reports whether the officer, the suspect, or any other motorists were seriously hurt, but the officer’s first priority was clearly medical aid. “We’ve got an ambulance coming, okay?” he reassured the man.
The suspect then asked, seemingly unaware of the seriousness of the situation, “They gonna take me home?” The officer did not confirm, instead focusing on maintaining control and waiting for backup.
In the footage, the man can be heard requesting that his wallet be returned to his pocket. The officer complies, attempting to keep the suspect calm until paramedics and additional units arrive.
Police officials have not yet released the suspect’s name or formal charges, but legal experts say he could face a litany of offenses including assault with a deadly weapon (the vehicle), reckless endangerment, DUI, and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
The incident highlights the risks officers encounter during routine duties and the potential for sudden violence. It also raises questions about mental health, substance abuse, and escalating hostility toward law enforcement. As investigations continue, both the officer’s dashcam and nearby surveillance cameras are expected to play a key role in determining exactly what happened before and after the crash.
