A devastating domestic shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, left eight children dead—seven of them the suspect’s own—along with two critically injured women, according to police.
Authorities say the violence unfolded early Sunday morning across two homes in the same neighborhood. The suspect, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, allegedly shot a woman at one residence before driving to another house, where the children—ranging in age from 3 to 11—were killed. One child was found dead on the roof, apparently attempting to escape, while another survived after jumping from the roof.
Two women, including Elkins’ wife, were critically wounded. Police later pursued Elkins, who died after officers opened fire during the chase. Investigators believe the घटना was strictly domestic in nature, though the exact motive remains unclear.
Family members said Elkins and his wife were in the process of separating and had been arguing prior to the shooting. He reportedly had four children with his wife and three with another woman, who was also injured. All the children were gathered at one home at the time of the attack.
Neighbors described a chaotic and horrifying scene. One nearby resident reported hearing gunshots and seeing the suspect flee, while others later witnessed the aftermath, including a child’s body on the roof.
Local officials expressed shock and grief, calling it one of the worst tragedies the city has experienced. Community members gathered later that day to mourn, holding vigils and leaving flowers in remembrance of the victims.
The incident is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in recent years.
