The true story of 11-year-old Rafael Mateus Winques is a heartbreaking tragedy that deeply shocked in 2020. It is a horrific case of filicide—the murder of a child by a parent—but the perpetrator was his mother, not his father. Rodrigo Winques, Rafael’s father, is entirely innocent and has spent years mourning his son while enduring the cruelty of internet misinformation.

In the digital age, sensationalism often travels faster than the truth. A particularly disturbing example of this phenomenon is a viral image collage that frequently surfaces online. The post shows a father smiling while holding his young son, juxtaposed with grim scenes of a police search and a child’s coffin. The caption attached to these images claims a father took his son’s life after discovering his sexual orientation.

This narrative is engineered to spark instant outrage, provoke emotional reactions, and gather clicks. However, it is a complete fabrication. The real story behind these photos is a devastating tragedy, but the villain is not the man in the photograph, and the motive is entirely invented.

The Victims of Misinformation

The boy in the photograph is 11-year-old Rafael Mateus Winques, and the man holding him is his father, Rodrigo Winques. Rodrigo did not murder his son, and the claims regarding the 11-year-old’s sexual orientation were entirely made up by internet trolls.

By attaching a fabricated hate-crime narrative to these images, anonymous creators exploited a child’s death for internet engagement. Furthermore, they subjected an innocent, grieving father to horrific online defamation. Rodrigo was separated from the boy’s mother and lived elsewhere; he was cleared by police immediately and was simply a heartbroken parent seeking justice for his boy.

A Community’s Desperate Search

The true events unfolded in May 2020 in Planalto, a small town in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. On May 15, Rafael’s mother, Alexandra Salete Dougokenski, contacted authorities to report her son missing. She claimed she had woken up to find his bed empty and the front door ajar.

For ten agonizing days, the community, local police, and firefighters conducted massive search operations—scenes from which were stolen to create the viral collage. Throughout this period, Alexandra gave media interviews, playing the role of a desperate, distraught mother pleading for any information regarding her child’s whereabouts.

The Horrific Discovery

The search ended in devastation on May 25, 2020. Rafael’s body was discovered hidden inside a large cardboard box in a neighbor’s garage, just steps away from the home he shared with his mother. As forensic evidence mounted and inconsistencies in her timeline emerged, the police investigation quickly zeroed in on Alexandra.

Faced with the undeniable proof of her involvement, she confessed to hiding the body. However, she initially claimed his death was an accident, stating she had given him a lethal dose of a sedative because he was agitated and staying up late.

The Path to Justice

Forensic autopsies shattered her alibi, revealing the dark truth: Rafael had actually died from mechanical asphyxiation. In a desperate attempt to evade justice and confuse investigators, Alexandra repeatedly changed her story. At one point, she even tried to falsely implicate Rodrigo, the boy’s father. Investigators easily disproved this cruel claim; Rodrigo had actually sent a voice message to his son that night to check in, completely unaware of the nightmare taking place.

In January 2023, justice was finally served. A jury convicted Alexandra Dougokenski of aggravated murder, concealment of a corpse, ideological falsehood, and procedural fraud. She was sentenced to 30 years and two months in prison.
